US plans to release 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes against dengue and Zika
In the US state of Florida, native officials have accepted
the release of 750 million mosquitoes that have been genetically modified to decrease
the native mosquito population.
The mission aims to decrease the quantity of
mosquitoes that feast diseases such as dengue or the Zika virus.
Permitted after years of discussion, the pilot
project has confronted criticism from environmental groups.
One assembly called the plan a "Jurassic Park
experiment."
Environmentalists have cautioned of possible damage
to the environment and the appearance of hybrid, pesticide-resistant
mosquitoes.
But the corporation involved in the project says it
will have no damaging effects on humans or the environment, quoting several
government-backed inquiries.
The strategy to release mosquitoes on the Florida
Keys in 2021 comes months after federal regulators accepted it.
In May, the U.S. Environment Agency permitted
British-owned British company Acetic to harvest a genetically engineered male Aegyptus
mosquito, called the OX5034.
Aegyptus mosquitoes spread lethal diseases in humans
such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.
Only female mosquitoes bite humans because they require
blood to make eggs. So the strategy is to release the male, mutated mosquitoes.
It is expected that these male mosquitoes will breed with wild female
mosquitoes.
However, male mosquitoes comprise unusual protein
that will kill any female before they grasp the age of bite. Only those males
that endure on the water of life will live and their descendants will continue.
The plan aims to decrease the spread of the disease
in humans by decreasing the population of Aegyptus mosquitoes in the zone over
time.
On Tuesday, Florida Keys Mosquito Control District
(FKMCD) officials gave last endorsement to release 750 million mosquitoes over
a two-year era.
There are many rivals of this strategy. About
240,000 people signed a request on Change.org assessing Oxyntic for using the
US states to test these mutable insects.
According to Oxytech's website, the company has
received positive results from arena trials in Brazil. According to intelligences,
the company tactics to unveiling the project in Texas from 2021 and has
received federal government agreement, but has not received official or native endorsement.
Reproachful the project, the environmental assembly
Friends of the Earth said in a statement: It will occur. '
But an Acetic scientist told the AP News Agency:
"We have released billions of mosquitoes in current years. There is no option
of endangering the environment or human beings.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are plentiful in South
Florida, and are more mutual in urban areas with ponds. In many areas, counting
the Florida Keys, these mosquitoes have established resistance to pesticides.
