1: Reality

In June 2017, Reality Winner, a 25-year-old US intelligence officer, was visited by two FBI agents at her Georgia home. Winner had leaked a secret government document about Russian meddling in the presidential election, and her interrogation by the agents was recorded. Tina Satter adapted the transcript of that interrogation into a play, Is This a Room, which has now been turned into a film. The movie stars Sydney Sweeney as Winner and is titled after Winner's first name, as well as a hint that the film is a true-to-life drama. The film explores the tension and artifice inherent in all art and showcases Sweeney's exceptional acting skills. Is This a Room is a gripping and tense film that IndieWire's Steph Green has described as "inventively mounted and extraordinarily tense."

2. What's Love Got to Do with It?

What's Love Got to Do with It? is a romantic comedy by Working Title that follows the story of Zoe and Kazim, two childhood friends who have remained platonic all their lives. Written by Jemima Khan, who has experience with cross-cultural relationships from her marriage to Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, the movie puts a fresh spin on the genre. When Kazim reveals that he's travelling to Pakistan to meet and marry a woman he's never met before, Zoe decides to document his arranged marriage. As she follows the journey, she discovers new things about herself and her feelings for Kazim. 3. You Hurts my feelings

"The Last Duel," Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Beth, a writer who is struggling to finish her debut novel. Her husband Don, played by Tobias Menzies, is a successful therapist who has always been a source of support and encouragement for her. But their seemingly perfect marriage takes a turn for the worse when Beth overhears Don confessing that he's not a fan of her writing. Directed by Nicole Holofcener, who previously worked with Louis-Dreyfus in "Enough Said," the film is a brilliantly crafted comedy that delves into the complexities of relationships and the ways we hide the truth from each other out of love. The characters are expertly portrayed, and the resulting movie is both warm-hearted and hilarious, drawing affectionate laughs from audiences.

"The Last Duel" is set to release on May 26 in the US and Canada.

4. Master Gardner

Paul Schrader, known for his heavy-hitting thrillers like Taxi Driver, American Gigolo, and First Reformed, has a knack for crafting stories around the concept of "God's lonely man" - a solitary anti-hero who conceals a dangerous mix of pain and violence. This theme is once again explored in his latest film, Master Gardener. The protagonist, a skilled gardener played by Joel Edgerton, is tasked with tending to the grounds of a wealthy dowager's (Sigourney Weaver) plantation mansion. However, his secluded and monastic existence is shattered when he's asked to train the dowager's grand-niece (Quintessa Swindell), leading to the resurfacing of his dark criminal past. Despite its provocative nature, Master Gardener is a remarkably subtle and elegant film, with finely-tuned performances by Edgerton and Weaver.

The movie will be released on May 19 in the US and May 26 in the UK and Ireland.

5. Hypnotic

Hypnotic, a conspiracy thriller directed by Robert Rodriguez (known for Sin City and Spy Kids), will have you questioning everything you thought you knew. Ben Affleck plays a police detective who becomes consumed by the disappearance of his daughter. While investigating a string of bank robberies, he meets a woman (Alice Braga) who introduces him to the concept of "hypnotics," people who can manipulate others with just a single phrase. Variety's Peter Debruge compares the film to The Matrix, Limitless, and Memento, and praises Affleck's performance and the film's mix of special effects and practical ingenuity. "Keeping up is like working out in a gym where gravity keeps changing," he writes.

6. Still: A Michael J Fox Movie

The documentary Still tells the story of Michael J. Fox's life and battle with Parkinson's disease in his own words. Fox, who rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like Back to the Future, was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the young age of 29 and kept it hidden for seven years before going public in 1998. The film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, weaves together interview segments, home movies, clips from Fox's films, and re-enactments of key moments in his career. Tomris Laffly at AV Club describes it as a "work of empowerment and empathy, a celebration of Fox's life as an actor and philanthropist."

7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

From the firing of writer-director James Gunn to his rehiring and subsequent busy schedule, it's been a long six years since Marvel's second Guardians of the Galaxy film hit theaters. But now, the beloved team, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and Drax, return for another interstellar adventure, this time facing off against the High Evolutionary. However, it may be the last we see of the Guardians, as Gunn has signed on to direct a Superman reboot and oversee all of DC's films.

8. The Little Mermaid

Disney's latest live-action-and-CGI remake, The Little Mermaid, boasts a progressive update to the classic tale, with a black actress, Halle Bailey, playing the lead role of Ariel, originally white in the 1989 cartoon. Director Rob Marshall, known for Chicago and Mary Poppins Returns, aims to break down barriers and teach the world about prejudice through the film's portrayal of Ariel and Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. In addition, the movie promises to feature a modern, dream-seeking Ariel, while still retaining the classic tale's charm, including a singing crab.

The Little Mermaid swims into cinemas on 24 May.

9. Fast X

The Fast and Furious franchise began as indie thrillers about undercover cops and illegal street racers, but it has now become a global science-fiction blockbuster series featuring some of Hollywood's biggest names. The latest installment, Fast X, is the tenth film in the series (or the 11th if you include Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw). The film features new cast members, including Jason Momoa as the vengeful son of a drug lord killed in Fast Five (2011), Rita Moreno as the grandmother of Dom (Vin Diesel) and Mia (Jordana Brewster), and Brie Larson as their contact in the secret service.

Despite its star-studded cast, Fast X is primarily about action, as director Louis Leterrier explains. "They went into space in number nine, and I was like, 'Okay… there's no way I can top that.' But what I can do is do stuff that we've never done before practically, such as rolling a one-tonne bomb – an actual one-tonne metal ball – in the streets of Rome, and hope not to destroy the Colosseum."

Fast X is set to be released on May 17.

10. The Eight Mountains

The Eight Mountains features unspoilt, idyllic and breathtakingly beautiful mountains, most of which are located in the Italian alps. The film, adapted from Paolo Cognetti's award-winning novel, follows Pietro (Luca Marinelli), a city boy from Turin, who befriends Bruno (Alessandro Borghi), the only child left in a remote rural village. Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix van Groeningen's spectacularly scenic drama sensitively chronicles their friendship through the decades. Justin Chang at the Los Angeles Times says, "This is the rare movie that understands how tied we are to the physical and psychological spaces of childhood," and "brings a little-seen world to life with an almost palpable physicality."
